There is a dangerous comfort in value. It promises clarity.
To value a thing is to place it, compare it, rank it, justify attention toward it and indifference away from it.
Civilization depends on this sorting. Markets depend on it more hungrily. They do not merely ask what something is worth. They ask how that worth might be extracted, displayed, protected, insured, purchased, or denied.
Once the logic spreads far enough, nothing remains safely outside it. Bodies acquire scores. Grief acquires duration. Labor acquires invisibility. Desire acquires subscription tiers. Protection acquires a fee. Even dignity is asked to produce evidence of return.
The worlds of Value are not arguing that valuation is always evil. They are asking what vanishes when valuation becomes the only recognized form of attention.
What cannot be priced may still be real. What is expensive may still be empty. What is profitable may still be a wound with excellent branding.
A society reveals its soul by what it refuses to count. It also reveals its soul by what it counts too eagerly.
The tragedy begins when price stops describing the world and starts instructing the world how to feel.
At that moment, value no longer measures worth. It manufactures it.
